Singapore to host its first International Volunteer Conference

The President of Singapore, Mr S R Nathan is the Guest of Honour for the 21st IAVE World Volunteer Conference which comes at a time when volunteering and philanthropy are gaining increased prominence in Singapore, with the national volunteerism rate at an all-time high of 23.3%.

“The World Volunteer Conference will see a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of the top thinkers and practitioners in the field of volunteerism in Singapore. This not only bodes well for Singapore’s aspiration to becoming a hub of ideas and action for volunteers in the region and beyond, but also presents an unprecedented learning opportunity for our local non-profits,” said Laurence Lien, Chief Executive Officer of the National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre, which is co-organising the Conference with IAVE.

The first IAVE World Volunteer Conference was held in 1970 in Los Angeles, USA with 85 delegates from 15 countries. It has steadily grown into the premier conference in the volunteering sector with 1,600 delegates from 110 countries attending the 2001 conference in Netherlands which was also the launch of the UN International Year of Volunteers. The last 5 sessions of the biennial conference have been held in Panama (2008), India (2006), Spain (2004), Korea (2002) and Netherlands (2001).
